We had a few meetings with James to discuss what could be done with what we envisioned. He brought samples, but he did not have exactly what we wanted, because we didn’t know exactly what we wanted. All we knew is we wanted something beautiful & dazzling when people walked through our front door. It took some talking and thinking of possible materials that would get us what we pictured, but between James and the owner of our company they came up with the paint and products and we love it!

Dimensional lettering is an excellent choice for lobby signage of almost any size. The letters can be machine cut from many types of materials such as architectural foam, aluminum, wood, and various plastics. Many of these materials come in a wide variety of thicknesses from 1/8″ up to 3″ thick.
This particular sign is fabricated from 1″ thick clear acrylic. After cutting and sanding the letters, the backs only of the letters were painted with the customer’s custom PMS colors. The result is a gorgeous effect that shows the colors through the front of the letters, but also highlights the dimension of the sign as light passes through the clear acrylic front of the letters. The overall sign size was about 6 feet long and about 2 feet high. Once completed, the sign was professionally installed in the lobby at the customer’s business.
How Are Dimensional Business Lobby Signs Made?
Dimensional letter signs are crafted by cutting, forming, or casting materials like acrylic, aluminum, steel, or foam into 3D shapes. They are manufactured using precision technology—primarily laser cutting, CNC routing, or waterjet cutting—to create raised, durable logos and letters. Once cut, the letters undergo finishing steps to match brand colors:
- Letters can be painted, brushed, polished, or coated to match specific branding.
- Painting/Coating: Letters are painted (often to match Pantone shades) or powder-coated for a durable finish.
- Laminating: Acrylic can be topped with a thin layer of real metal (brushed silver or gold) to provide a premium look at a lower cost.
Mounting Letter Signs
These letters are then mounted to surfaces using stud mounts, adhesives, or raceways.
- Stud Mounting: Letters are attached using metal pegs, often creating a “floating” effect away from the wall.
- Flush Mounting: Letters are attached directly to the wall for a sleeker, flat look.
- Raceway Mount: Letters are attached to a metal structure, which houses electrical components and reduces the number of holes needed in the wall.
