Its easy to create beautiful and unique etched vinyl applications on just about any glass surface with custom designed privacy film from Iconography Studios. Glass walls, windows, doors, table tops and more can be transformed into works of art that incorporate your business’ logos and style.
The etched vinyl material comes in rolls up to 48″ wide and 150 yards long. The frosted material comes in several densities with slight variations on the type of frosted pattern. All these frosted materials are easily machine cut on our vinyl plotters into just about any shape or pattern you can imagine, and can include lettering, logos and pictures. Avery Dennison manufactures many different textures and patters that we can work with.
Unlike other vinyls, the etched vinyl material is a little more tricky to install, so we recommend only working with certified installation teams like the ones at Iconography Studios.
What is the Difference Between Etched Glass and Etched Vinyl Applications?
The key difference is that etched glass is a permanent alteration to the glass itself, creating a durable, high-end look with a frosted or textured appearance, while etched vinyl is a self-adhesive film that imitates glass etching, offering a temporary, cost-effective, and flexible solution with easy application and removal for changing designs.
Etched Glass
Etched glass has a decorative design or a frosted texture created by chemically or physically removing a portion of the glass surface, resulting in a permanent cloudy or textured appearance. It is made using methods like sandblasting, acid etching with a stencil, or glass etching cream, where an abrasive or corrosive substance is applied to the glass to wear away the surface.
- Permanence: The design is permanently impressed into the glass, lasting indefinitely and resistant to fading, scratching, and UV damage.
- Appearance: Creates a sleek, high-end, and luxurious frosted or textured look that is considered part of the glass itself.
- Durability: It’s extremely durable, highly resistant to wear, and remains in good condition as long as the glass does.
- Application: Requires professional methods like acid etching, sandblasting, or laser etching to modify the glass surface.
- Cost: Generally more expensive due to the labor-intensive and permanent nature of the etching process.
Etched Vinyl
“Etched vinyl” is a type of adhesive vinyl that mimics the look of frosted or sandblasted glass. The adhesive film is used for decorative purposes on glass items like mirrors, creating an elegant, frosted appearance without the mess of traditional etching cream. It is an easy-to-use, temporary alternative to glass etching, available in various translucent colors and textures, and can be cut with a cutting machine like regular adhesive vinyl.
- Permanence: Temporary and can be easily removed, repositioned, or replaced without damaging the glass.
- Appearance: Mimics the appearance of traditional glass etching with a frosted effect, allowing light to pass through while providing privacy.
- Durability: Less durable than etched glass; it can wear, peel, or be scratched over time depending on quality and exposure.
- Application: Applied like a decal or sticker, requiring minimal effort and allowing for quick installation and removal.
- Cost: A cost-effective alternative to permanent glass etching, making it an accessible option for various budgets and projects.
